Her Majesty officially opens the new Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge

The Queen officially opened the new Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge today as part of a visit to the region. School children waved flags and patients came out of wards to view Her Majesty unveiling a sign marking her visit.

The £200 million flagship hospital was developed by Equitix Ltd in partnership with Skanska and opened its doors to the first patients in May 2019.

Hugh Crossley, Chief Investment Officer for Equitix said: “We are delighted by her Majesty's visit to the Royal Papworth Hospital today. Equitix is privileged to be part of this renowned cardio-thoracic facility delivering first class healthcare to communities in and around Cambridge and further afield.”

The Queen gave the hospital its Royal title in 2017 because of its pioneering heart and lung treatments making it the first in the East of England to receive such an accolade. Papworth hospital is known for a series of medical breakthroughs including the first heart transplant in the UK carried out in 1979.
